This past weekend, a unique and exciting event took place in Knoxville, Tennessee, as the Ultimate Weapons Summit brought together martial arts enthusiasts for a one-of-a-kind experience. Hosted by the commendable Marie Hensley of Ultimate Weapons, the summit showcased talent and camaraderie among participants.
The weekend kicked off with an intensive training camp led by Team AKA on Friday, where participants engaged in various forms of conditioning and techniques. One young martial artist Ava Hemmer shared, “We did lots of conditioning on our legs. My legs are definitely still feeling it” The camp focused on enhancing skills through running and practicing forms, setting the stage for the thrilling competitions that followed. Saturday was filled with challenges and competitions that tested the skills of all participants. Despite the physical demands, the atmosphere was invigorating, with everyone sharing the experience of soreness, making it a level playing field for competitors.
Attending the summit was not just about competing; it was also about building relationships. Ava noted, “I stayed with two of my friends, which made for a great experience. We got to know each other better and build strong relationships with everyone at the summit.” After the day's events, many attendees enjoyed meals together, further fostering a sense of community
At the summit, Ava the Pink Dragon Hemmer, a young martial artist earned the prestigious MVP title, receiving a power ring as a symbol of their hard work and dedication. Recognized by Marie Hensley for standing out in both days of events, this accomplishment is a testament to their talent and commitment. The competitions included CMX battles, where participants showcased their skills in creative forms and weapon demonstrations. The excitement of witnessing various tricks and techniques provided invaluable exposure for all competitors.
The Journey of a Young Martial Artist At just 13 years old and with six years of martial arts experience under her belt, this young athlete's journey began with an inspiring moment while watching "Kung Fu Panda." “I saw Kung Fu Panda, and I was just inspired by that panda,” she shared, illustrating how media can ignite a passion for martial arts. Training at American Karate in Winslow, Missouri, she is currently working towards her black belt, with testing scheduled for August. “I’ve been training hard, and I’m excited about the upcoming challenge,” she said, highlighting her dedication to mastering her craft. Ava's future aspirations to open her own martial arts school one day and a focus on improving her competition skills, this young martial artist is on a promising path. “I want to get better at competing, especially since I’ve just started competing as a black belt,” she explained. Her goal is to excel in various divisions, including Traditional Forms and Creative Weapons. As she prepares for upcoming events like the US Open, her enthusiasm for martial arts shines through. “I’m looking forward to competing and seeing everyone again,” she expressed, embodying the spirit of perseverance and passion that defines martial artists.

The Battle of Atlanta is a prestigious martial arts tournament that has become a cornerstone event in the Martial Arts community since its founding in 1970s. The tournament has grown significantly over the decades, attracting competitors from across the country and around the world.
Held annually, the tournament features a variety of competitions, including kata (forms), Point Fighting, Continuous Fighting and Weapons competition. Participants are categorized by age, rank, and gender, ensuring fair competition for martial artists of all skill levels. The event is known for its spirited atmosphere, where competitors and spectators come together to celebrate martial arts.
Throughout its history, the Battle of Atlanta has showcased numerous high-profile competitors, contributing to its reputation as one of the largest and most respected martial arts tournaments in the World. Many participants have gone on to achieve notable success in martial arts and related fields, further enhancing the tournament's legacy.
The event is open to all martial artists, making it an inclusive platform for both seasoned athletes and newcomers.
This year it was held June 12-14 in Atlanta at the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel. The action started Thursday and was full throttle non stop until Saturday night. Here are some of the notable highlights, wins and results.
The debut of Bailey Murphy and Kevin Walker on Top Ten USA. They both fought great and helped them win 18-29 Team Sparring with Ty Saint and Coach El Java. Senior Team Sparring was exciting during Friday night fights as well. ATL got the win in exciting fashion with Willie hicks as the anchor. ATL had a huge crowd at here supporting the team and it was super exciting.
Women’s teams was won by JPMs Kitana Everett and Katarina Herman. Katarina went on to win Women’s Grands as well and Kitana won Open Weight.
Men’s Heavy Weight Grands was won by Kareem Abdulla who fought exceptionally well and was my personal favorite fighter at Battle of Atlanta.
Another competitor I enjoyed watching all weekend was Iesha Whitfield who won 30+ women’s point fighting grands and had excellent results in forms as well.
Ty Saint was another favorite to watch along with Kevin Walker which both fell short in the Weight Grands but stood out to me this weekend and i look forward to seeing them at the next event. Kevin in Heavy and Ty in LW. Enrique Letona has been on fire and making a case for himself as one of the best fighters of all time with big wins since joining Team Paul Mitchell at the Battle and other recent world events.
Team Legend won multiple Black Belt Junior Open Weight divisions. In forms, Judah Sagawa won the 14-17 Boys Forms Overall Grand Championship. Matthew Gruita won the Men's Traditional Forms Overall Grand Championship. Alyss Groce won the 14-17 Girls Forms Overall Grand Championship. Lukas Drevinskas won the 13 and Under Boys Forms Overall Grand Championship. Dawson Holt won the Men's Traditional Weapons Overall Grand Championship. Maddy Kennaway won the 18+ Female Traditional Forms Overall Grand Champion. Amanda Duarte won girls Forms Grands. Tony Homsani and myself presented on stage for Amanda’s division where I also awarded Amanda with the Power Ring and Ouss Power Baby Shirt.
Sport Karate Zone was also covering the event and was conducting interviews all weekend with host Jackson Rudolph which also performed in an amazing Star Wars Performance on Stage. Reid Presley did a great job as the host of the night show and Friday night fights. He also performed in the Star Wars performance with his Paul Mitchell Teammates. Jewels and Justin Ortiz also performed a cool stunt Cobra Kai Skit at the Battle.
With its rich history and vibrant environment, the Battle of Atlanta continues to be a highlight in the martial arts calendar, fostering camaraderie, competition, and the spirit of martial arts with amazing performances and entertainment making it one of the best events to go to in the Summer.
